The Reading Room
Coming Soon...
As a historical nonprofit, we are always looking for ways to engage the public with our mission. Preserving and protecting the county’s history is a big part of our mission, but we need this county's amazing history to reach the public. That is why on June 15th, 2027, we will be launching our free public research program, the Reading Room.

The origins...
We have been collecting archival materials and artifacts from the county since the 1930s. Started by West Bend High School teacher Edith Heidner, our collection has been an asset to the county for almost 100 years. Now’s your chance to see what we have… Today, our collection has grown to hold over 60k items. Everything from property records to rare Civil War artifacts. We have been generously gifted an amazing treasure trove of the past. Previous public access had been limited to paper copies, exhibits, and brief appointments. Now, almost every object in our collection will be accessible for free public research. Staff will assist in handling the objects to ensure they are safe and protected, but you will be able to view these items up close and in person for the first time.

Whether you’re a student researching for a class project or a business owner diving into your property's history, we have the resources you need. Over the last 8 months, we have been moving cases and filing cabinets, painting walls, and sourcing furniture to bring the 1889 probate courtroom back to life. Starting June 15th, we will be open Monday-Tuesday from 2:00-5:00 pm.

The 1889 Courthouse was made as a monument to the public, and we are honored to be able to share it with you. Thank you to all of our Members and the volunteers who helped make this possible. Thank you especially to John Spartz and Luke Stoffel, who helped tear down partition walls and helped move hundreds of historic records. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact our Archivist Jenna McWilliams to learn more.

Even if you just want a place to read or do some work, we are happy to have you visit our Reading Room! Free Wi-Fi will be available during open hours. If you aren’t eager to dive into research yourself, our Archivist will be able to help you get a research project started. We offer staff-conducted research and reports for $95.

Parting Words:
Starting June 15th, we will be open for you to dive into our collection. Bring your curiosity and love for the past, and we will supply the window to times gone by. Find the Reading Room on the first floor of the 1889 Courthouse. Please reach out with any questions.
